Back. To you.

Way Back No. 8

The Sit

Ten minutes.

A chair is fine.
Nothing fancy.

Close your eyes
and find one sensation.

The breath at the nose.
The weight in the chair.
An itch.
An ache.

And just watch it.

Don’t fix it.
Don’t scratch it.

Watch it the way
you’d watch weather.

It will change.
It always changes.

That’s the entire secret.

The one the mountain retreats
charge ten days of silence for.

Everything rises.
Everything passes.

Including the thing
you’re currently sure
you can’t survive.

From chapter eight

The ten minutes, held for you.

Press begin. A soft bell opens the sit, and the page keeps the time in silence. There is no counter and nothing to watch. When ten minutes have passed, the bell will bring you back.

What usually happens

Around minute two, the list arrives. Everything you should be doing instead. It is allowed to stand in the doorway. You do not have to get up.

Around minute six, the itch. Watching it instead of scratching it is the whole practice in miniature.

And your mind will leave a hundred times. The coming back is not the failure. The coming back is the sit.

One line to carry

Everything rises. Everything passes.

If someone came to mind

Some people read this page and think of one person the whole way through.
If that happened, send them back to themselves. It costs them nothing.

The other Ways Back are in their chapters, one per chapter, all of them free. This one is yours whenever you need it.
