Way Back No. 12
The Open Hand
Today’s practice is small.
Pick one thing
you’re gripping.
You already know which one.
It’s the one that flinched
while you read this.
You don’t have to release it.
I’d never ask that
on a Tuesday.
Just once today,
open the hand.
Say:
I want this.
I’m working for this.
And it is allowed to change.
Then notice
what your chest does.
That little drop.
That inch of air.
That’s what non-attachment
feels like.
Not less love.
More room.
From chapter twelve
What usually happens
The thing you are gripping named itself before you finished the page. Trust that flinch. It knows.
Saying the three lines feels like a risk, as if loosening the grip might lose the thing. Notice that the opposite arrives: the same want, with air in it.
One line to carry
Not less love. More room.
If someone came to mind
Some people read this page and think of one person the whole way through.
If that happened, send them back to themselves. It costs them nothing.
The other Ways Back are in their chapters, one per chapter, all of them free. This one is yours whenever you need it.
